Anatomy of Preservation
A journey from specimen to object of study
About this video
From specimen to display...
Through time-lapse footage and the help of some flesh eating insects, we discover how to prepare an animal specimen as a research object and for museum display.
In this particular case (no pun intended) a Jamaican fruit bat (Artibeus jamacanensis) is prepared for inclusion in the University of Michigan Museum of Zoology. As the Museum itself admits, the "process might be a little stomach-churning, but then again, good science isn't always mess-free."
