Engineering Fire

Reducing carbon emissions by increasing the efficiency of flames.

At the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in San Francisco, scientists are hoping to reduce carbon emissions by finding ways of making flames – an indicator of combustion – more efficient.  They’ve teamed up with engineers, who are using computers to simulate flames so that their structures can be studied in slow motion. It is hoped that understanding more about the combustion reaction will lead to the development of devices that can operate using alternative fuels.
