How a Microwave Oven Works
About this video
Tasty radiation.
Although the Microwave oven is now a ubiquitous piece of kitchen technology, knowledge about how it works might not be quite as pervasive. Luckily, Bill Hammack (AKA The Engineer guy) is on hand to look under its hood and offer a simple explanation of how it’s able to zap a ready-meal to life.
Looking at the physics of electromagnetic radiation, Hammack examines the principles at work inside the oven from energy transfer to the inner workings of its magnetron (the device which creates the microwave radiation). He also has a tasty little test for measuring the wavelength of the electromagnetic radiation transmitted by the oven, using just a plate of cheese.
Yum.
