Understanding the Network
About this video
Who is in control of your digital identity?
Each time we use a mobile phone, send an email or browse the internet, we feed a network hungry for our personal data. As we participate within this 'information sector' corporations are exchanging our personal information for profit. Communicating across these networks involves sending large amounts of additional meta-data which can be retained and compiled by service providers to produce 'digital-identities' for each user.
In 'Network', graphic designer Michael Rigley reveals how these identities can be sold and used to target us more effectively with 'personalised' advertising content and search results.
There has been further discussion as to whether such activities restrict the flow of information on the internet, placing individuals within self-contained 'filter-bubbles'. It is feared that this personalised 'curating' of content is preventing users from accessing information that may challenge their views.
